Love Letter to Your Inner Child Who Wants Someone to Gets Them
“YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND ME”
How many versions of you screamed those exact words?
8-years old. 12-years old. 15-years old. 17-years old.
You felt no one understood you — and do you feel that way now?
Or is there still a part of you with an aching feeling in your chest because there’s so much of you that isn’t seen or listened to?
Do you still silently beg the universe to send you someone who will finally hear what you’re saying?
Someone who checks in with you because they know you feel things deeply.
Someone who asks you how your day was — and will let you talk for as long as you want without any indication you’re being too much.
Someone who gives you space to be yourself because they want only that version of you.
… If that younger part of you is still waiting for that to drop into their lap, this love letter is for you:
What if I were to tell you that you are that person for yourself?
And you don’t have to wait.
I know — I feel the eye roll coming BUT
It’s true.
You are the person who understands yourself and your inner child best.
Of course you want someone outside of you who truly gets you — and I truly hope the universe delivers that person to you because everyone deserves those connections in this life.
What I don’t want is your inner child to feel lonely for however long it takes for that person to come into your life.
Your inner child deserves that understanding now.
And they can have that — with you.
Any time you connect to your inner child, you are giving them the space to show themselves and be understood.
So, what you do with that time matters.
The next time you feel this aching sensation like no one understands you or will never understand you — I want you to pause.
Find one EFT point you enjoy. (Read this blog post for the main points AND their associated emotions)
Tap on that point. Breathe in and out at a pace that feels comforting to you.
And ask “What part of me is hurting? How old is this part?”
Trust the age that comes up — even if it doesn’t feel related. Go with the first ping from your younger parts because that’s usually who really needs you that day.
Then, pause again.
We’re not going to rush this process. You both deserve time for the experience to unfold without force or a time crunch.
After a moment of pause — continuing with tapping and a few breaths.
Say this to them: thank you for trusting me enough to show me this
And notice what happens in your body. Does the ache change? Does the overpowering feeling of being misunderstood feel slightly lighter?
Then, ask this younger part: What do you need from me at this moment?
And pause.
What is the first thought that comes to your mind? Trust what comes up — and honor that younger version of you by doing the thing.
If you can’t make it possible, can you compromise? Can you imagine what they asked for? Can you send them a protective energy until you can do the thing?
This is how you show yourself that someone does understand them. You understand yourself.
